Today, we'll talk about keeping your family safe and secure in your new home. I'm here with Tap Oliver from Lock and Key, and we'll go over a few things you should keep in mind.
First of all, the best thing you can do to secure your home is to reset your locks. You never know if the previous owners still have a key, or if contractors have copies of the key. You want to be the only one with a key to your home.
While keypads can be very convenient, especially for families with children, there are some things to keep in mind. Sometimes, people become so reliant on the keypad that they stop carrying their keys. Then, if the battery dies or some kind of electrical glitch occurs, they are locked out of their homes. So while these are a nice option, don't forget to take your keys with you.
Next, do not hide your key. Tap is 100% against it. There are some products now for hiding your keys, such as fake rocks with secret compartments, but it's still too risky to just leave a key outside. If you really need to leave a spare key outside of the home, leave it with a neighbor or family member you trust.
Finally, I'd like to share a quick story about a house we recently closed on. When we went to the lockbox to get the keys, they weren't there. It turned out that the lockbox was broken, and the contractor had buried the keys in the yard! Lucky for us, he was able to dig it up. This just goes to show that it's best to get your own set of keys when you move in rather than relying on a contractor or the previous owner.
